I had the same problem with a carburetor from a 626. If your float has too much solder it will be too heavy for the gasoline to lift all the way to shut off the gas. I used a good float from a '15 Dodge Brothers carburetor (stromberg, I believe), and it solved the problem. The float is very nearly the same size. It worked great.
