This is what is known as a "link belt". Still in use today for lots of industrial uses. For at least the 29's it was an alternative to a solid belt. To install a solid belt the rad. and vib. damp. had to be removed for clearance at the front crossmember. A link belt was a easy repair and is mentioned in the 29 service lit.
