The name Berline as a body style has been used and mis-used often and the term itself pretty much fell out of use by the mid-30s, a throw-back to an earlier era. Definitions can vary a bit but typically it's a variant on a 4-door fully enclosed 5-passenger sedan on a short or at most a mid-length wheelbase (never a 7-pass wheelbase), most always with a divider window, and almost exclusively with blind rear quarters as in a club sedan style body. Typically intended to be chauffeur-driven; occasionally found with a single, side-facing rear jump seat for that rare extra guest.

The ex-Barbara Hutton '35 Twelve meets the general definition of a Berline, as does the '30 Pierce-Arrow.
