Fuel gauge rebuild

Now that I've sorted the charging on my '30 745 I am turning my attention to the fuel gauge and ammeter on the dash, neither of which are working.

The ammeter has suffered a burn-out but not so bad that I can't clean it and rebuild it.

The fuel gauge had been disconnected many moons ago and there is no pipe to the tank as far as can tell.

The little glass tube is dry and dirty and the brass counter-tube on the back is rough with the thread pretty shot.

Does anyone have details of how this works or how it is connected to the tank. I recall reading somewhere that som special red fluid is required in the tube. Any suggestions?

Thanks chaps. Toodle pip!
