This guy bought as many filters as possible and carefully dismantled them to assess quality. Makes interesting reading especially the Fram PH43 which was reported as very badly constructed.

expletive earlier. I appreciate all help and advice but its easy to forget that I am 4000 miles away from the nearest US motor parts shop and 75% of the brands you mention mean nothing to me here and are not available
The simple answer is to ditch the Packard and buy a Rolls Royce but quite frankly, I don't want to do that so I will struggle on!
