Re: Transmission rebuild

Ken,

My advice is disassemble as little as possible to replace the front and rear seals. If a transmission is working fine, the best thing, in my opinion, is to leave it alone. Give everything a very thorough cleaning with kerosene, put it back in the car and enjoy.

If you are determined to tear it down, I recommend taking very detailed notes and lots of photos during disassembly. Synchro transmissions have lots more parts than the old straight gear boxes. Pay attention to the orientation of sliding gears and synchros so you can put them back the same way (front to the front). Check gear teeth, shaft roundness, and shaft trueness. The mating of the gears is important, as is their travel. There should, someplace, be tolerances available for use during reassembly.

Cheers,

Tom
