They went to the new rubber style with serrated rod in 52. Were the knobs still the dark hard rubber in 54 or did they go to colored plastic? If vendors don't have new ones or unless repro knobs become available, what about the possibility of changing the rod back to a threaded type and using an aftermarket replacement knob--Dorman makes several different styles--not quite correct and most are chromed plastic but should be able to be trimmed, scuffed, painted and made workable. Maybe those could even slip onto the serrations. If not, the rods should be fairly easy to make. As I recall rods only have one or two bends and some #8 or #10 threads.

Am wondering how or where you would put a setscrew with the garnish molding if you had something machined.
