adjusting the timing for changes in altitude

In the spring of 2012 we plan to drive our 1940 110 from the central valley of California to Lake Tahoe a difference of 5,000 feet in altitude.
If i remember correctly.
My dad used to mark the distributor and stop and adjust the timing by turning the distributor 2 or 3 times during the trip as we gained altitude. This would generally keep the car from losing power and overheating.
Any suggestions or general guidelines to follow for this would be appreciated. Otherwise it will be by trial and error.
Thank You
