I started with flux wire (no gas). If you look at my early welds in my trunk on my blog, you can see how poppy, lumpy, and just plain ugly they are. Grinding makes them look better, but I found a lot of holes in the seam I thought I had filled in, but did not in reality. There is a lot of grinding when using flux.
Since switching to MIG (shielded gas), my welds are cleaner with better penetration. I do not have to weld off nearly as much slag.
Having used both, I made the commitment and bought a proper MIG welder and would not go back to the flux. If you have a gas option, I would recommend it highly.
