1940 Manual OD Trans Synchro

Last month I had my transmission rebuilt. After a 45 min freeway drive, and after I turned off the freeway, drove a few miles at 40 MPH and slowed down for some golf carts crossing the road, the transmission locked in 3rd gear.

AAA towed me and it's back at the shop.

One of my synchros welded itself to the end of the input shaft, literally.

In rebuilding the transmission nearly everything was renewed.
Countershaft
2 Cluster gear thrust washers
Cluster gear needle bearings
Pilot bearing
Gasket set
D/S Rear bearing
M/S Rear bearing
Pilot Roller bearing
OD Seal
Main shaft 1st&2nd

The synchros apparently did not need renewing.

The shop will install 2 NOS synchros and perhaps a used input shaft if it's better than mine will clean up to be. The original main shaft core is being returned to compare it to the new one for tolerances, but when these new main shafts have failed, it was not with the synchro on the input shaft, so for the moment we're not pointing any fingers.

The shop owner has 35 years experience specializing in drive train. The mechanic has at least that much.

So I'd like to hear some conjecture from my friends about why you think this happened and pass this on to the shop before they reassemble. I will see about getting some photos, also. In the meantime, please imagine.
