I removed the PB power unit from my 56 Exec about a month ago.
Completely disassembled the power unit EXCEPT i did not remove the armature from the worn gear. Left the armature and worm drive intact in the housing.
With brush end plate and motor housing removed i found that the brush retainer screws in the end cap were poorly installed. I have absolutely NO REASON whatsoever to suspect that this unit was ever disturbed after it left the factory. So i sincerely doubt that the brush holder screw installation was the work of any service technician.
I also found some rather peculiar kind of almost hardened putty like substance in the armature. I'm guessing it is some kind of a balance thing but i don't know. NOT the first electric motor i've ever had aapart and never seen such putty like application (see pic).
I haad very little trouble getting the brushes over the commutator. However the unit was removed and was a bench operation which i'm sure made the brush/end cap installation alot easier.
