If you replace bearings, you had best recheck the end-play. You can easily make that tool, just a flat block of steel with a large hole, a threaded hole, and a bolt and locknut. Don't take a chance on ruining new bearings. You can easily make any needed shims from brass shim stock and a pair of tought scissors.

At worst, do it by feel. An end-play that you can just barely feel is probably 0.001 or 0.002", so play that you can just about feel and barely see might well be close enough.
