alright guys I'm batting 1000 on this damn motor. much of which I have refrained from publishing on this forum. but this issue I have to ask of you guys. Parts book is no help.

so I put in 7 pistons no problems. got to the 8th and the oil ring snaps on me when I'm trying to put it on. Kanter sends me another one, no issues there.

I go today to put the rings on the 8th piston, which goes without a hitch, and I notice that the oil ring is loose in its slot. so I pull out one of the old pistons and noticed that the oil ring has two shims and an oil ring expander behind it.

the first set of oil rings from Kanter did not come with expanders. the replacement one did come with an expander, which I asked if I should use and was told no. none of them ever had shims sent.

but now I'm wondering if I should have received shims and expanders for all 8 oil rings.

I really don't want to put this motor together only to fire it up and have big problems! too much money has been spent so far.

the first two images are of the new pistons with the new oil ring and me moving the oil ring up and down in its slot.

the last two show the old piston.

I cannot reuse the old shims because they are standard bore. well technically I can they will just be under a bit.

I have not taken the other 7 pistons back out, but I'm pretty sure they will need shims and expanders and I didn't notice until now on the 8th. I'm worried when I take the oil rings back off they will snap too. this is supposed to be fun....not stressful!

you can also see a ring expander on the second compression ring, which may or may not be needed, but was not sent with the new second rings.

what is the solution guys?
