There is/was a tool to free those grease passages. It was packed with grease, positioned on the fitting and struck with a hammer. 
It would drive new grease in, forcing out the old hard grease. I don't remember where mine is at the moment and not sure if it's still available. Obviously you need a straight fitting, not an angled one.
