Try not to read too much in between the lines.

I believe that the "factory" adjusting hole plugs were steel on these cars, but most people wouldn't recognize one of those unless they found them as originally installed on their car. The first time I did brake work on one of these cars, I almost threw 'em away and put rubber ones on in their place.

Parts like that often got lost during service, too. Yet, because the plug holes were identical on so many vehicles and that style of drum brake remained in use for so many years, the aftermarket stocked and sold rubber ones by the "card" to dealers.

If you have a good old-fashioned parts store in your area, I bet they still have 'em available, individually, in rubber.
