Bit earlier than that. Invented in 1913 by Harry Brearly to solve the problem of rust in gun barrels of the British forces. It rapidly improved, around 1919 it was about to what we call 410 stainless. Duplex Stainless Steel was invented in Sweden in 1930.
Ford's Model A had it in their door handles, rad shell, gas & some rad caps.
Could be why the more exclusive car companies deferred from using it, maybe seen as a second grade or common product whereas plating was seen as a quality finish.
