Now I understand what area you're looking at, here are a couple of the channel etc.
This shows rear section just after it's been cut away. It is laying on frame, later to be thrown away with many other bits.
New section welded in.
As the channel goes round towards the back of the rear fender it starts to narrow quite a lot. Will take a couple of pics and measurements tomorrow & try & show how it goes.
