I was also really nervous about this. About a year ago I found a Youtube channel called PaintSociety. His tag one is "Don't over-think it. It's just paint".
That mindset alone helped me overcome my fears.

I'll put down some basecoat. If it sucks I'll stop there, sand it out and fix it.

I am not good enough to paint the whole car at once that is why I am doing it in pieces. I can find my mistakes and fix them easier that way. It will take me longer but after 9 years what's another month or two.
