I don't remember seeing those U things but the way they are sort of hidden and are positioned in the air out slot I wonder if they held some kind of louver or deflector to direct air more toward the right and left instead of dumping it all straight down over the hump.

EDIT: as mentioned, I don't remember them on the 56 plenums but that means very little. Wonder if they could be something added after the fact by a dealer or owner as they don't appear to be present on the plenum shown in the heater components illustration on parts plate 29E.
