The retainer holds the thermostat in the housing. Yes, it should be used with a modern thermostat. I believe the retainer is a wire spring that fits in a recess in the housing. You may be able to make a substitute retainer. Most thermostats are 180F rated, I would try and find a 160F or 170F thermostat. Kanter and/or Max Merritt should be able to provide you with a new thermostat and retainer.

You may want to check in the Packard Literature and Manuals section on this site to see if there is a manual for your 200 you can download.
