I spent about a half hour under the car tonight with a screwdriver, chiseling off the crust from the transmission in prep for removing the engine oil pan, Ultramatic pan, and bellhousing cover. Lo and behold I uncovered that filler thingie that I've heard so much about. Obviously the transmission fluid level hadn't been checked or replenished in a long time, before the car was parked for a longer time. I can't wait to see what the rest of the tranny looks like after some more digging, I've only seen them in pictures so far as this one is so crusted over. I'm hoping all the leakage was engine oil running back, otherwise the tranny will have to come out for all new seals someday sooner rather than later. We'll see how it works first, then worry about the leaks.
