That thought crossed my mind when I did the line, but it seemed consistent with the routing I saw on others. As for the covering. I suspect the "cotton" cover you refer to might have been asbestos. The only thing I know of that might rival or work is the fiberglass insulation used on race car headers. I would be interested in further response and information.
