it actually does allow air in. through the sides of the square. a square peg in a round hole has openings all the way around.
I sprayed carb cleaner down the tube after cleaning it and sure enough it came spraying out around the square. so it does indeed suck air in and it is heated by the manifold.
I put a new copper o-ring on it and painted it with 2000 degree header paint, leaving the tube unpainted.
