cleaning up the gears on the new transmission. second gear has a few worn ball bearings, but it does spin well with lubricant and it was fine when it had gear lube on it in the trans case. also the gears are lapped as a set and my old second gear is even worse! I'm thankful for the new gears and believe I will get many more miles from them. everything else is excellent!

I have new bearings from a good friend and will make new gaskets. thanks for everything DAF!

I started by spraying my usual rust converter slash primer after wire brushing the pooh out of the case. then I waited a few days and sprayed on the Packard green. per the usual Henry norm, stainless bolts to be added. yes I know it will never be seen, but I'm ocd.

also took the master cylinder out, took it apart, cleaned it in my degreaser brew, and repainted with high temp paint. mostly for its oil/gas resistance properties. baked it in the oven and rebuild will commence tomorrow, sans the extra rubber washer they decided to add to the old kit....doesn't belong there. contemplating honing it, but need to buy new hone. used up the old one on the brake for the 70 Dart. new master cylinder kit was bought from rock auto, part number pictured.

oil pump cleaned, wire brushed, and rust converter slash primered. will be ready for paint when mounted to motor.

old crank was turned .020 on the number 6 journal, which matches up with the bent rod and the piston with the skirt expander. you can see the two white marks on the journal...meaning .020

the motor must have thrown a bearing on number 6. I'm hoping the bores are all good. will know tomorrow.

new crank obtained from the 36 parts I acquired. it was turned .010/.010 at some point and had new bearings in the block. the bearings had some bad spots though and machinist says usable if unable to get new ones. i'll get new ones. Crank had some very small surface rust on the journals that polished right off with out changing the .010/.010 says machinist

valves turned, checking guides tomorrow.

studs coming out, wish me luck because if they break off....its 35 a stud to drill and tap. fingers crossed.

top of trans says 454, not sure if it was from factory marking or not. but its correct number for the limo and the speedo gear is correct as well. need check rear gear for tag or turn wheels and count turns on driveshaft to confirm ratio.

while at the machine shop, and I'm no expert, there was a Packard inline 6 marked with a date of 40 it appeared. I guess that is 1940. the owner of this motor was said to be glad mine was at the same shop.
