Repro water jacket side plates to OEM specs have been available pretty much continually for a very long time, I forget who the current actual manufacturer is, but I believe Max and perhaps Kanter have them available.

That crude-looking plate you have may or may not have been the reason for a cracked block, the 1938 320 blocks are rather well-known for cracking. But regardless, I'd get a correctly made plate.
