I recently had a situation like this, and what had happened is that when I reconnected the vacuum line to the vacuum advance after doing some work that required I get that line out of the way, I rotated the distributor unknowingly and threw off the timing. I could get it to start, but not easily, but it seemed to run fine afterwards, with the exception of pinging when hot, which is how I noticed it. Perhaps your timing is off?
