Howard is right, check the points. Likely oxidized or not adjusted correctly. Ross has a great video that explains how to adjust the distributor correctly including the points.

Double check the simple things. Like correct wires going to the plugs in the correct order. Check the cap and rotor for burning or corrosion. Make sure the cool is getting voltage, etc. Initial timing also.

You'll get it, just need to figure out where the problem lies.
