I can't read what it says but would go for it and see what happens. Even if backwards I do not think there would be damage -- just no operation because the potential coil would essentially be grounded on each end and never get energized.

It will be interesting to see how the gauge does with neg ground. As far as I know they are not polarity sensitive and there is no residual magnetism on the needle or anything to contend with but I do not know that for fact.
