Yes, the springs are important as these style handles 'cock' to lock the doors and without that resistance from the springs against the escutcheons the action of simply closing the door could (does!) result in the door locking itself.
I have the springs for mine and they are EXACTLY the same as the ones in my 58 Pontiac and my 67 Mustang so they are pretty well universal.
I used trimmed welding rod for handle pins in the past too. Just something a bit smaller diameter than the bore to keep the handle in place as the escutcheon traps the pin in place while those same springs keep the whole assembly a neat tight unit.
