My dad's '38 has sidemounts. Initially I liked them because they looked more expensive/important. In practice they are very heavy and difficult to manage. If I ever did get a flat I wouldn't bother pulling from the sidemounts...they don't even have any air in right now anyways.

Honestly I wouldn't say they are terribly in the way when working on the engine. The massive fenders are the worst offenders in that respect. It's hard to lean over them and they are so tall that they cover most of the engine bay. If I really had to I could remove the sidemounts to work on something in the engine...haven't had that need so far.
