Joe, at the risk of repeating myself, you may have seen this before. Attached is a photo of a rear axle end play fixture I made when working on the 47 Custom Clipper.

With both axles installed: The fixture is secured to the axle with the nut; the axle pushed in as far as it will go; the screw is turned until it just makes contact with the axle housing flange, then locked down with the nut. Next, the axle is pulled out and the amount of movement is measured with a feeler gauge between the end of the fixture screw and axle flange. Shims are removed or added to achieve the specified end play. You only need to check one axle. You will probably be okay, but the end play does need to be checked when the bearings are serviced. The fixture is similar to the one pictured in a Packard shop manual.
