I thought getting all 12 volts to the ignition was always a good thing, especially when starting
Little curious myself. Was taught the ballast resistor was there to keep points from burning and also even though rated 12v, the ign coil is not truly designed to run on solid 12 v all the time--more like 8-10v. With engine running, full spark will be available but in starting with the draw of starter motor and resulting voltage drop plus the ballast resistor in circuit, coil supply voltage could drop enough that spark would be too weak to start reliably. Thus the temporary bypass to full 12v to account for the starter draw and provide the nominal 8-10 volts at that time. Am I incorrect in that?
