I believe it was an article published by PAC some years ago that expressed the notion that the "Hash" pump used a cast bottom plate with bushing. However, Turbopackman (Eric) advised that he had one of those units apart and found no such bushing. Perhaps that casting was intended as a sacrificial bearing surface.

I'm no engineeer, but doubt that a lower bushing is needed. I've heard from more than one source that the oil pressure around the gear should have a self-centering effect - at least, within the pump body.

IMHO, the installation of an upper bushing (along with new or reconditioned driving shaft) appears to be the best approach, but I would also add an oil channel (as you discovered in the SBC pump) to lubricate the driving shaft and bushing.
