Today was a big day for the Packard. I picked up the engine this morning from Classic and Exotic Service and after a short ride home a friend and I spent the rest of the day installing it in the chassis. The engine work was actually finished a few weeks ago but Brian at C&ES is a bit of a perfectionist. After lining up the marks on the crank and cam sprockets Brian decided to check the valve timing against the book figures. Packard specs say the intake is supposed to open at 20 degrees BTDC but my valves were opening 6 degrees ATDC, a full 26 degrees off. After much head scratching and asking around he couldn't find anyone who had actually checked the timing. Everyone he talked to had simply lined up the marks and called it good. The next step was to find an engine that runs and check it against mine. After a couple of weeks just such an engine showed up, it was a super eight from a 740 and it had the same weird timing as mine. I don't know what's going on with the timing and having the engine sit in his shop wasn't shedding light on the issue so I figured is was time to call it done. If you have run in to this problem or can shed some light on the issue let me know.

Here are some pictures of the engine's journey today starting in the driveway after I got it home . The kids rushed out to see where daddy had spent their college money so they come first.
