I don't know for sure either but would almost bet it was the upholstery grade high adhesion contact cement -- the kind that is sprayed out of the guns. That was used for a lot of things at the time. Think it was a thicker version of contact cement that was also used for weatherstrip cement.

Aside from hide glues and other light duty water soluble adhesives, the cements like Duco or model cements were light duty and there was also rubber cement that could provide a light but removable grab between metal and some porous materials. For something that could provide a lot of grip and take higher temperature and moisture like the mylar would need don't believe there were a whole lot of adhesive options in the 50s other than contact cement.
