All the 288, 327, and 359 blocks are the same length, width, height, etc. The difference is internal on those motors. But I can see where the earlier (pre-1951) motor may he a bit different in overall assembled length because of the waterpump or fan design, and mounting. Keep in mind the the engine mounting changed in 1951 from a front mounted design, to a side mounted design.

You can use a 51-54 block on the earlier years if you use the waterpump, and front mount off of a '50 and prior engine. The mounting holes are still there 1951-54 blocks to allow this.
