Oops, I wasn't thinking of anything that deep, but just assumed it would have been like the American cars - operated by a electric-powered hydraulic pump, but with a lever control.
Now, I can see what the key was for - to relieve the hydraulic pressure in the jack.
The system seems rather primitive - rather ill-suited for modern-day drive-thru service at McDonalds.
