O_D, a smaller aperture opening will increase the depth of field eg f/11, 16, 22 etc and appearance of sharp focus through smaller circles of confusion.A larger aperture opening f/2, 2.8, 4.will give an unsharp appearance to foreground and background of what depth of the image is actually focused on due to larger circles of confusion.

The higher the aperture ratio number, the smaller the diaphragm opening of the lens and the resulting increased depth of field.
