Re: 17th Annual Studebaker-Packard Cruise-In/Rally in Ohio

This one-day event, hosted by the Ohio Region of the SDC, was primarily an attraction for Stude owners, but open to all Packards. As such, I was't expecting Packard owners or enthusiasts to drive in from more than a couple of hours away from the Akron area. Turns out that the old location, Wink's in Barberton, was only about 20 minutes further, but I had always balked at going that far, myself.

I must add that there were some non-SP "show cars" allowed in, but they got put waaaay out back.

Meanwhile, Randy and I had a good chuckle with a '56 GoldenHawk owner about so many urban legends and so much misinformation about these cars. I learned a new one from him - that the V8s were built by Studebaker, not Packard, but in Germany and shipped back to the US.

Later, while Randy was off foraging, some old fella came up, took one one look at Randy's car, and proceeded to tell me that those cars were no good...electric problems...transmission problems...V8s bent push rods...blah-blah-blah...yadda-yadda-yadda. I told him that was funny because my dad purchased a '56 brand-new and drove it daily for nearly seven years. Then, he goes on to tell me that he'd worked as a mechanic in Studebaker and Packard dealerships and none of the cars they built back then were any good. I just grinned and walked on - wondering, silently, WTF someone like that came an S-P event to begin with. Mebbe he drove a non-SP and got stuck out back. Still, I had good laugh - with no cover charge or minimum drink purchase!

While there were only about a dozen Packards in attendance, I bet we'll see more next year - weather permitting. When I get one of my V8s back on the road, I look forward to driving it over for a day well-spent.
