Russian literature is written for people who have to stay indoors 6 months out of the year to keep from freezing to death. A short version of that freezing thing would be Jack London's To Build A Fire.

Coldest winter I ever spent is the one maybe 12 or 13 years ago when I read The Gulag Archipelago in its entirety. The best part is where the author describes my birthday and the women mixing concrete on the sidewalk and toting it to the forth floor (stairs) all the while talking about Sputnik I. "It flies!" "Yes, it does fly." Which explains how the 180 got to be the ZIS.

I have some nominees for Gulag stints.

This winter, in between reading all kinds of Packard stuff, I'm reading about Stalingrad.
