Been a while since I had one apart but IIRC, the valve slides a considerable way in and I believe the back spring seat is about half way if not slightly farther when installed. With the valve in, the only thing that sticks out is the uncompressed spring -- maybe an inch or two.

Don't know which reference books you might have and it's not much better than the 51-4 manual but in the 46-50 SM, the Hydraulic section might have a couple of more pictures. There is a semi exploded view of the pump. If you have an older Motors Manual, some of those prior to about the 20th edition also have info on the Dura Pump.
