Hi all, Yes, a 327/288 crank will fit into the same block ...just need the correct rods for the crank...288 rods for a 288 crank, etc. With regard to fitting 288, (327 has same block, bored out 60 thou for a bit more torque ) to 282 vehicles, Packard put out service instructions on fitting the 288 to the pre-war 282 engined vehicles. I have already put them into info.com sometime past. There is no great problem with it and it is a Packard approved mod. As previously mentioned, you need to fit a front engine mount plate from the 282 engine. There is also a bit of rework on the gearbox mounting holes in the 282 gearbox cross member. It gets a bit more complicated fitting an OD to the 38 and earlier 120's but there are plenty running around. I would not recommend fitting an Ultramatic to a pre-war Packard under any circumstances.
