If the battery is connected properly with positive ground, then the positive side of coil would go to the dist. The negative side of coil would connect to the ignition switch. Reversing the wires would result in a slightly less powerful spark but there still should be one.

If you take the wire off the dist and scratch it against the block while checking the spark, is there still no spark? 6v won't give a very big spark so the high tension lead should be fairly close to the block when checking.
