This thread wasn't intended to question what color the engines should be as my understanding was the same as O_D's response in post #3. The intent was to try and discover why so many engines that should be gray ended up green. I think Howard's response in post #2 is probably the best answer to that question.

Anyway, based on the on-line photos available, and the responses to this thread, approximately 31% of those observed/reported 22nd/23rd series engines ended up green. This is not statistically significant due to the small sample but I found it interesting anyway. Thanks to all that responded.
