Gentlemen,
Thank you both for your replies. As I suspected, it has to come apart.
I'm hoping for a broken spring but will prepare for the worst.
After this happened I drained and refilled the transmission and overdrive and fluids were full and no chunks were found. I may be lucky!
I will post my results.
