Here are some photos from a 1951 Club Sedan parts car.
There are no retainer strips used for the headliner above the rear windows. It looks like the headliner material went under the weatherstrip channel for the window and the window moulding would also havew helped to hold it in place.
There is a strip of felt material about 1/2" wide by 1/8" thick between the headliner and the body metal to provide a cushion.
The first 3 photos are the right side and the last 2 are the left.
