I don't have a 48 latch assy to play with or photo so I can't tell exactly what is broken or offer any really helpful suggestions.

Since the door latches are mirror images, one possibility is you might remove the latch from the other door and see if you can find what is broken and how to repair or at least what has to move to release the wheel. Unlike rears, the front door latches are relatively easy to come out. Instructions on latch removal start on page 16 in the body section of 46-50 service manual.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/servicemanual4650/Section4.pdf

If you can determine what has to move maybe a tool could be made to reach in and trip and release it. Unfortunately, the screws holding the broken latch on the door cannot be removed without the door being open. If that doesn't work the only other thing I can think of would be to carefully mark the hinge locations and then unbolt the hinges from the inner door supports. There MIGHT be enough room to push the front door edge out just past the fender and then forward slightly so the latch wheel clears the striker.

If trying that. you would have to be very careful not to catch the door edge on the fender and mess up the paint as well as have some kind of support for the door or some help so nothing slipped and let the door fall. The door check would still be attached by a rivet and any large movement could damage it. All it needs is to move forward. On my 47 it looks like maybe 1/2 inch or less for the wheel to clear the striker. Once clear and open slightly the hinges could be refastened. Don't forget, those doors are a lot heavier than they look and can get away from you.
