Does the coating look like it is applied-like a lacquer or shellac type material or is it more of a rubber. Krylon offers a variety of clear coatings that might do the laquer type & possibly one of the spray on upholstery waterproofing treatments might work.http://www.krylon.com/products/categories/artist_clear_coatings/
