One thing I am curious about is the timing curve. In some years Packard used different springs or shims with the vacuum canister to modify or fine tune the curve. Just wondering how that approach translates to new units meant for another make or distributor or even rebuilt original units or was it ever that important.

The more I research the more I wonder too. I know if my advance isn't working, but when it is working is it working correctly? I think I'll get my vacuum advance rebuilt and then find someone that can bench test my distributor.
