I found this thread very illuminating. I have an exhaust manifold leak on two cylinders. I had no idea these studs actually got into the water jacket!, Oh, what a mess I would have made. No wonder many people have trouble getting the old studs out. Corrosion on the stud threads could make them very hard to get loose for replacement.
